Located 4km East of Melbourne’s CBD with a population of 17,992. (2006 census). South Yarra is one of Melbourne’s most prestigious suburbs containing some of the best shopping strips, restaurants, residential addresses, and land marks in Melbourne.  Chapel St featuring the famous Jam Factory (an old factory converted into a shopping centre) Prahran Market (the oldest market in Melbourne), the Como Shopping Centre – (a high class shopping mall also housing office buildings and Channel 10’s head quarters), the imposing Melbourne Synagogue (famous for its domed Roof), Melbourne High School (one of the top government schools in Melbourne)  are all prominent land marks in South Yarra.  The suburb boarders Toorak – a multi million dollar locality well know for it’s mansions and luxury architectural house styles – and “Hawksburn Village” – (a small exclusive shopping strip in South Yarra) – is a major attraction for residents in this locality.  The “Domain Precinct” is the area attracting the highest real estate prices. Land prices are amongst the highest in Melbourne.  There are a larger number of residents renting in South Yarra than owner occupiers, streets are narrow but tree lined with a residential nature. Falkner Park is the major green area in the suburb.

The major shopping strip is Chapel St – famous for it’s wide range of shops, restaurants, boutiques, super markets, cafes, tourist shops etc. A popular attraction for tourists.

House Styles:

historical mansions, heritage listed houses, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco architecture, are all dominant features. Land sizes are small, and rows of terrace housing common. High rise apartment blocks – mid 20th century and some modern developments- are common. Luxury terrace style town houses are common. Off street parking is a bonus with many of the period houses.
